The Rules
The Golden Rule
All convention rules are in effect whilst playing Thing Ball, and “I was playing Thing Ball” is not an excuse for breaking convention rules. We will pull the event if things get out of hand.
The Release
The Thing will be released into play at the Opening Ceremony, so be there or be square!
The Ruck
From there on in, The Holder of The Thing must:
1. Keep The Thing inside the playing area. This is to keep it in active play and not get it lost.
2. Keep The Thing on their person. Being The Holder is an active role in Thing Ball. If The Thing is found abandoned anywhere, it must be returned to Ops for re-release.
3. Keep The Thing reasonably visible. To keep The thing in play, it must be visible outside of any bag, clothing, costume, or other covering and viewable from eye level.
4. Keep The Thing reasonably accessible for other players to Claim. Enough of The Thing needs to be where someone can clearly put a hand on it without breaking convention rules. It must not be tied and must be easily releasable at all times.
Capture The Thing
Anyone can Claim The Thing by approaching the current Holder, taking hold of The Thing, saying “I claim The Thing” and then leaving with it.
To be eligible to score points as a Player and for your Team you MUST post a selfie to the #🦯-thing-ball channel in the HotaruCon Discord.
All photos must show:
The Thing
The current Holder inside the convention (chin/torso if they are not comfortable showing their face)
The current Holder’s Team Ribbon and Badge Name clearly
Posts that do not match the above may not be given scores
Players may not break any of the convention rules when claiming The Thing.
Rules for Claim:
Put your hand on the thing and draw it from it’s storage place
Hold the thing and either
Say “I Claim the Thing” quietly and sneak away
Say “I claim The Thing” loudly and claim 3 unhindered pacesThe player, after max 3 paces, must then put The Thing somewhere accessible for Claim
If the Player does not take their selfie within those 3 paces or before someone else snatches if trying for a duck-and-dive then bad luck duck, you lost your chance at points!
In the event of two teams having hands on The Thing, play rock paper scissors to decide the Holder
In the event of three teams having hands on The Thing, play rock paper scissors tournament style to decide the Holder.
Whoever wins RPS Has to yell “I won the thing” and then take their selfie and 3 clear paces before another Claim can be made.
Some Important Bits
Whilst a player is holding The Thing, it is considered Held by the team that they belong to.
The Thing must be returned to Ops between 22:30 - 23:30 pm each night where your badge name and team will be recorded.
If The Thing is not returned to Ops by 23:30pm THE WHOLE GAME stops at 11:30 that evening and all chances for more points are lost!
It can then be collected again between 9:30 - 10:30 am. Once The Thing enters Ops it's play time is on pause until it is collected again and the clock starts again. If The Thing is not collected by the Holder who put it into Ops for safe keeping that holder's time will be capped at the previous evening and The Thing will be put out to be Claimed by anyone.
HOW THE GAME ENDS after 12 noon on Sunday
While point tallies are counted up at 12 noon on Sunday there's still the Grand Finale.
Raggedyman will be standing guard at the doors to The Closing Ceremony.
Brave Holder it is your duty, should you choose to accept the responsibility, to present your ownership to Raggedyman.
Show him your Badge Name and your Team Ribbon then take your seat.
The Game is then over.
